Design e² : the economies of being environmentally conscious Distributed by PBS Home Video, c2006
Examines the economies of being environmentally conscious in green building design.

The first program, The green apple, uses New York City, particularly One Bryant Park and the Solaire, to demonstrates how the ubiquitous skyscraper can be a model of environmental responsibility.

The second episode, Green for all, features architect and activist Sergio Palleroni as he works to provide design solutions to regions suffering from social and humanitarian crises. Shows projects in East Austin, Tex. and with the Yaqui Indians in Mexico where architecture students are helping residents build low-cost, environmentally-friendly homes using local materials.

The third program, The green machine, follows Mayor Richard M. Daley as he strives to make Chicago "the greenest city in America" with numerous LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified buildings, a solar-powered public transportation system, and many green roofs, including one on Chicago's City Hall.

The fourth episode, Gray to green, takes the notion of the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) to grand proportions by turning Boston's "Big Dig" steel and concrete waste into spectacular residential design.

The fifth program, China : from red to green? depicts a rapidly urbanizing country at its tipping point and finds a sustainable solution in Steven Holl's Beijing project, which will have the largest geothermal heating/cooling and greywater recycling system in the world upon completion.

The sixth program, Deeper shades of green, presents three visionaries who are changing the face of architecture and environmentalism and features some of their projects. Focuses on Ken Yeang and his "bio-climatic" National Library of Singapore, Werner Sobek and R128, his energy-efficient, steel and glass box house, and William McDonough and his model sustainable village of Huangbaiyu, China

The UNLV School of Architecture and the Klai Juba Lecture Series welcomed Ed Mazria, a passive solar architect who has dedicated 30 years to the field of architecture. Ed Mazria is the Founder of the Global 2030 Challenge, which will transform buildings into carbon neutral buildings which will benefit the environment. Mazria main concerns deal with issues such as resource depletion and rising energy consumption. The lecture includes detailed graphs and charts of not only energy and resource consumption in the United States but also includes global statistics. Mazria's concerns on global warming bring forth a harsh reality on issues such as climate change, endangered species and species as well as many changes that will affect the ecosystems. Mazria then introduces "The 2010 Imperative", which will change the way professional schools of architecture go about the curriculum on design. Studio projects will be designed to engage the environment in away that reduces or eliminates the need for fossil fuel. Mazria's final topic is the introduction of the "2030 Global Challenge", in which new building projects and major renovations meet fossil fuel energy consumption performance of half the national average for that building type. Mazria also looks at some of the world's most efficient buildings

The UNLV School of Architecture and the Klai Juba lecture series welcomed Margaret Crawford, Ph. D. Dr. Crawford is a professor of urban design and planning theory at Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During her lecture Dr. Crawford discusses the book that she co-authored, Everyday urbanism. She explains the idea of "everyday urbanism" and how it is an attitude toward looking at the built environment and appreciating what is around you. The book mainly discusses everyday urbanism in relation to Los Angeles; during her lecture she explains why the urban design methods in her book center on Los Angeles. Unlike prior urban design methods that pointed out design flaws in what Los Angeles should've been, their method demonstrates Los Angeles' beauty for what it was and is

Hospitality transformed : resort hotels in 2055. Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, c2006
"Students are invited to investigate what the future holds for hotel design in the age of advanced technology and customized consumer experiences. Fifty years from now, the design of resort hotels and the experience of their guests are certain to be influenced by technologies that are in development today. This unique, digital design competition seeks original ideas about the scale and scope of changes in the hospitality industry. Working individually or in teams, students will first need to consider the journey to the destination, whether in orbit, under the sea, or in an urban setting. The design of the resort itself will need to incorporate the latest uses of structural and material systems, form development, and information technology. The results will be packaged into a digital submission containing the design of a resort hotel for the year 2055 with a minimum of 100 guest rooms and facilities for a wide variety of public and private functions"--Publisher's website

Pt. 1 explores the relationship between architect and client, looking at houses they design for government, big business and themselves. It also examines the fight between those who prefer innovation and those who want more conservative buildings. Pt. 2 explores issues surrounding public development. Architects must balance the desires of business clients with the obligation to the public good, with cities as the battleground. Pt. 3. From seemingly hopeless suburbs to a downtown hotel, this final segment visits the artistic potential of architecture. What gives an architect the confidence to build a great building? Is it a good site, tolerant neighbors, a gifted contractor or a brave client with lots of money?

Klai::Juba Lecture Series. The UNLV School of Architecture and the Klai Juba lecture series welcomed Mark Rios, FAIA, FASLA a multidisciplinary designer whose portfolio ranges from industrial design to landscape and site architecture. The award-winning Rios believes in his own philosophy that every great designer must be multi-disciplined, must be a collaborator, and must have style. Thinking beyond boundaries and crossing boundaries is where Rios believes that a designer evolves. Rios shares many projects including architecture projects such as the California Endowment in Downtown Los Angeles; national award school in Lafayette Park; and the Westfield Mall project in Los Angeles. Landscape architecture projects include Fresh Kills in Staten Island, New York; the Staples Center; the chess garden in Los Angeles; as well as a wish garden in Napa Valley, California. Rios shares in this lecture his own personal advice which is the importance of research and discovering the unique qualities in place, culture, technology, time, and each other. He concludes this lecture with his final statement being the importance of letting the designers works show what their value system is

The UNLV School of Architecture and the Klai Juba Lecture Series welcomed Pliny Fisk, a professor at Texas A&M and a visionary on sustainable design. Fisk provides information on the importance of reusable materials and designing for the future. This lecture includes topics such as ecological footprints, agriculture, and sustainable farming. Fisk a co-founder of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, introduces his independent non-profit organization by explaining his thoughts on design, master planning, policy and education, and tools. Fisk stresses the importance of the non-profit and the benefit of having people from outside of the architectural community. The lecture includes some insight on what countries such as China, the United States, and Mexico are doing to be environmentally smart. Fisk spoke of China's progress by creating sustainable villages and use of their coal resources. Fisk also highlights what alternative methods other countries such as in Baja California, Mexico who use salt water as an alternative to using filtered water in toilets, as well as fish scales used as an alternative for insulation. Fisk's main points on life cycle planning and design, baseline green and green balance were demonstrated through illustrations through pie graphs and charts

The Monticello dialogues : William McDonough in dialogue with Michael Toms New Dimensions World Broadcasting Network, c2003
pt. 1 Democratic design (57 min.)
From the lineage of Thomas Jefferson and Buckminster Fuller emerges another brilliant prophet of the possible. Architect William McDonough is carrying the banner of "anticipatory design science" to this generation and he is waving it in the boardrooms of some of the largest global corporations. The buildings, product innovations and ideas emerging from his team are at the forefront of what he calls "the next industrial revolution." It is a revolution so profound that it views humans as tools of nature. The central question that drives McDonough's work is: "How can we best serve all the children of all species, for all time?"
pt. 2 A revolution in thinking (57 min.)
From rethinking the concept of the automobile (car as nutrition!) to the "semiology of extreme danger" (nuclear power plants), to McDonough's declaration of interdependence: which he calls The Hanover Principles, this dialogue has more new ideas per minute than all those found in line at the patent office.
    pt. 3 Design as celebration
Our minds design the future every moment with how we see the world around us and what we choose to do. Architect William McDonough is an anticipatory design scientist in the lineage of Thomas Jefferson and Buckminster Fuller. He thinks "outside the box" and is applying forward-looking design ideas to all aspects of life. In this exciting dialogue, he describes what it means when your goal is to, "love all the children of all species, for all time." Time magazine named William McDonough a "Hero for the Planet" in 1999.
pt. 4 The rebirth of the commons(57 min.)
Imagine for a moment, a beautiful future, free from poverty, war and suffering. Where do you see yourself living in that beautiful world? For many of us we see a bucolic life in the country. Anticipatory design architect William McDonough sees that healthy harmonious future in the city. Really. Named a hero of the planet in 1999 by Time Magazine, McDonough envisions a post sprawl future where the human enterprise is more compact and more abundant and more fun. He still sees cars in our future, but tomorrow’s cars won’t pollute more efficiently, they will be effective silent runners, releasing POSITIVE emissions that support life. And public transport (read trains) will double as a power utility. McDonough’s celebration of the city is a sign of the positive transformation of culture; a culture where we can be people with lives again, neither consumers nor units in a planner’s design algorithm, nor fields in a security database.
pt. 5 Designing peace (57 min.)
In his 20's William McDonough traveled to the Jordan Valley where he came face to face with the shocking remains of war. He was forever marked by the realization that war is nothing less than the killing of our children. In this program he explores, from a designer's unique perspective, what the opposite of war would look like. "Violence is antithetical to basic human desire" he says and urges a fierce engagement; to wage all out peace. Also in this dialogue; waging peace in Brazil with books, at the headwaters of the Mississippi, in the media, and in the White House.
pt. 6 Cradle to cradle : going green, with William McDonough and Steve Bradfield (57 min.)
When talking about the future of the environment, choosing between what is bad and less bad isn't good enough, according to Bill McDonough, who with his partner, chemist Michael Braungart, are championing "the next industrial revolution." He speaks of his work with Ford, China, Green/Blue, Louis Mumford and more. For anyone concerned about our ecological future, this dialogue serves as a positive tonic. Includes special guest Steve Bradfield of Shaw Industries, the largest carpet company in the world, which has adopted "cradle to cradle." Program
