UNLV School of Architecture Welcomes
Chris Genik
Lecture title: The Works

on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 7-8:30

Video available on VHS & DVD. Ask at the ASL Service desk.

Chris Genik, founding principal of California-based Daly Genik Architects, will discuss "The Works" as part of the Klai Juba lecture series. The event will be preceded by a reception in the building's lobby at 6:30 p.m. Both the lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Genik has directed the design of a number of Daly Genik's dynamic commercial projects including the Offices for RioPort.com, the Vans Incorporated stores, and the Boulder House in Vancouver, Canada.

In addition to his architectural practice, Genik has taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture since 1992 and is currently head of the undergraduate program. Genik worked with the City of Los Angeles on a funded research project for establishing new design criteria for the Hyperion Waste Water management plant. The joint study focused on the evaluation of new sustainable materials for application in corrosive and extreme environments. He was part of the design task force with the City of Los Angeles' Bureau of Engineering that evaluated urban design and architectural design guidelines for the City of Los Angeles new Air Treatment Facilities buildings. He is currently planning a symposium that will examine the opportunities for alternative development and architectural opportunities in downtown Los Angeles.

Genik also has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, Arizona State University, the University of Houston, Art Center College of Design, the University of Southern California, and the University of California, San Diego. He has served on juries and lectured at a number of institutions including Rice University, the Vico Morcote in Switzerland, and the Architectural League of New York.

Biographical information from: http://www.carleton.ca/duc/News/news09290401.html
Chris Genik completed his undergraduate studies at the Carleton School of Architecture in 1983 before going on to earn his Master's of Architecture at Rice University in 1985. In 1989, he founded Daly, Genik architects with Kevin Daly, and their work together has earned AIA medals for projects of residential, commercial, and institutional scales for using a craftsman's mentality to manifest works of architectural intellect. Their current project, their largest yet, is a major revitalization initiative in Pasadena for The Art Centre College of Design. Their firm, along with those of Frank Gehry and Alvaro Siza, has been chosen to spearhead a 15-year plan to create a new campus for the celebrated design school. Daly and Genik's responsibilities include the conversion of six industrial buildings into student housing and the renovation of a 60-year-old wind tunnel originally designed to test airplanes into a central event space. Over the course of his career, Genik has maintained a high profile in the world of architectural education, as well as practice, teaching at SCIARC, the Art Center College of Design, Arizona State University, the University of California San Diego, and the University of Southern California. Genik will also be the Graduate Visiting Professor in the Carleton School of Architecture in the Winter/Spring term 2005.

Quoting Chris Genik:
"The ultimate purpose of architecture and a school that teaches architecture is to broadcast what the built environment can yield," said Undergraduate Program Director Chris Genik. "It's about engaging the city, engaging its planning. That's happened more since we moved Downtown, by the way. Having an urban school reasserts the value of discussion about the transformation of places and cities. That's what architects do, that's our charge." from: http://www.downtownnews.com/articles/2006/01/16/entertainment/entertainment01.prt
