Project description/narrative:

Las Vegas Spaghetti Bowl
The design of the Las Vegas Valley Spaghetti Bowl pays tribute to the beauty of the desert through the use of native plants including the extensive use of Joshua Trees as well as native rock. Large red sandstone boulders frame a snaking desert wash while smaller rocks form tortoise silhouettes. The endangered Desert Tortoise is further celebrated by five 7 ft. tall 2 ton concrete sculptures. As a Las Vegas Valley resident or visitor drives along Interstate 95 or 15 they are able to witness this design from many angles all the while enjoying the brightly painted modern pictographs. These pictographs can be found on clinging to free-standing walls and climbing freeway support columns. The 62 acre Spaghetti Bowl project, initiated and managed by the Nevada Department of Transportation, creates a focal point not only for the City of Las Vegas but for the entire Las Vegas Valley. This project was named 2005 Project of the Year by the Nevada Chapter of the American Public Works Association.
