Can I get a library card if I am not a student?

All persons affiliated with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the Community College of Southern Nevada are eligible for borrowing privileges with the UNLV Libraries upon registration with any of the Libraries' circulation desks.

To assist members of the local community with their specialized research needs, the UNLV Libraries extend borrowing privileges to the public. Residents of Clark County and Pahrump ages 18 and older may borrow books from the UNLV Libraries upon registration. To register, the borrower must present a valid Nevada driver's license or Nevada I.D. showing a local street address. Active duty military personnel may register by presenting a valid military I.D. card, along with proof of residency. The registrant must also allow the UNLV Libraries to place on file the imprint of a valid major credit card.

High school students under age 18 may borrow books if they are enrolled in a course for credit at UNLV, CSN, or other participating educational institutions.

Current dues-paying UNLV alumni may borrow books from the UNLV Libraries upon registration. To register, the borrower must present a current alumni card, a valid photo ID, and proof of address.

What should I do if I can't find a book on the shelf ?

Ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk. If the book has been checked out, you may place a hold on it at the Circulation Desk. If we have your current email address, we will notify you via email when the book is available. If we can't reach you by email, we will telephone you and mail you a notice. We will hold the book for you for seven days from the time we notify you.

If a book that is supposed to be on the shelf cannot be located, you may complete a Search Request at the Circulation Desk and an in-house search will be initiated. You will be notified when the book is located, or if the book cannot be found within two weeks.

What do I do if I need a book that someone else has checked out?

All books are subject to recall if they are needed by another university-affiliated borrower, or if it is needed to be placed on course reserve. You may have a book recalled for you at the Circulation Desk, or by placing a Hold Request online.

If a book has been recalled, the new due date is 2 weeks from the day the recall was placed. If the book is not returned by the new due date, fines of $2.00 per day will be assessed. Books that are recalled for reserve are due immediately.

Can I renew library materials over the phone?

No. However, if your card is in good standing (i.e., no money owed, no overdue items, library card is not expired) you may renew books online by following the instructions posted at http://www.library.unlv.edu/circ/renewonl.html. You may not renew a book if another patron has placed a hold on it, or if you have already renewed it the maximum number of times.

Exceptions may be made for patrons with disabilities who have made prior arrangements with the Circulation Department.

If I return a book to a book drop, when will it get checked in?

Book drops across campus are emptied every day. Books that are returned to a book drop when the library is closed will be checked in and backdated to the last day when the library was open.

Can I return UNLV library materials to any other libraries?

UNLV library books may be returned to any of the libraries in the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) system, Nevada State College, or the Law Library at UNLV.

Media & Computer Services and Document Delivery Services materials checked out from the UNLV Libraries MUST be returned to the UNLV Libraries.

Books returned to Clark County public libraries will remain charged to your card until they reach the UNLV Libraries, and you will be responsible for fees assessed on overdue materials.
