Materials Collection (PMC) |
The PMC collection contains materials for use by teacher education students and P-12 teachers. Examples of items in this resource collection include a wide variety of activity and idea books, thematic units, curriculum standards, and literature notes to accompany juvenile literature volumes. Also represented are materials in subject areas such as lesson planning, classroom management, children's literature and classroom teaching skills. | Early Reader | The Early Reader books are designed for the emergent reader level, usually Pre-Kindergarten to third grade. Most of the ER books are illustrated stories with colorful characters and topics that interest children. They use simple, controlled vocabularies and are standardized in size and format. This diverse collection contains books written in a variety of languages, but most are in Spanish, or with Spanish and English appearing side-by-side on the page. Many of these books introduce bilingual skills and increase language and learning abilities. | Braille | Many of the CML's Braille books for children are published by the Braille Institute, which encourages Braille literacy among blind children by helping them discover fiction, history, and other educational subjects. Some of the items in this collection are part of the Braille Institute's Brailleways anthology of children's fiction and nonfiction. | Picture Books | The books in this popular collection are written and illustrated for children from preschool age and up, combining narrative and illustrations to tell a story. CML's picture book collection includes copies of all Caldecott Medal award winners and honor books, the majority of which are located in picture books. | Juvenile fiction materials, commonly referred to as chapter books, emphasize text over illustrations. While juvenile fiction appeals to children of all ages, subject matter of "young adult" books is typically geared toward middle and high school readers. The CML's juvenile fiction collection represents a variety of classic and contemporary literary subject areas and includes copies of all Newbery Medal award winners and honor books. | Nonfiction | The CML has a growing collection of nonfiction titles that correspond to traditional P-12 curricular areas, as well as informational topics of interest to school-aged children. Most of these books are written for conceptual understanding by younger readers, and many are illustrated with drawings or colorful photographs. These books are often good resources for research projects. The CML's folktale collection (PZ8.1call #'s) and poetry collection (PZ8.3 call #'s) are also located in this area. | Textbooks | CML's textbook collection contains Clark County School District adopted textbooks for elementary through high school levels, as indicated in the Nevada State Adopted Textbooks list. Teacher's editions, workbooks, or guides accompany some of the textbooks. The textbooks cover a variety of classroom subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, science, and reading. | The CML has a collection of over 700 authoritative reference resources including encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, guides to books and stories for children, bibliographies, children's literature reviews and indexes. Biographical information on authors and illustrators of children's literature and reviews of their works can be found here in series titles such as Authors and Artists for Young Adults, Children's Literature Review, and Something About the Author. These books are shelved in the Reference section by call numbers using the Library of Congress classification system.
