TitleAnnie and the Old One
PublisherLittle, Brown and Company
Illustrator(s)Parnall, Peter
ISBN0316571202
SummaryThis book tells the story of a young Navajo girl. It describes her life with her parents who are a weaver and jewelry maker, and especially with her grandmother to whom she is very close. Her grandmother lets the family know that she will be going back to the earth when the rug that Annie's mother is weaving is done. Annie finds ways to get in trouble at school, and to do things at home that will keep the rug from being finished. Her grandmother understands what she is doing, and talks to Annie in such a way that she can accept the cycle of life, and can accept the fact that her grandmother is dying. This book is beautifully written and illustrated. It is appropriate for dealing with grief and loss of a beloved grandparent, as well as being culturally relevant to native americans of the Navajo tradition.
