Libraries Gift and Donation Policy

Books

The University Libraries welcomes donations of books and information in other formats that enhance the Libraries ability to support the teaching and research missions of the University.  Gifts are accepted with the understanding and agreement that the Libraries makes all necessary decisions as to retention, use, and discard.  When it is necessary to decline a gift, University Libraries collection development staff will suggest alternative organizations.

For the Lied Library collection, there is particular interest in high quality hardcover and paperback books.  Items generally not needed include magazines and journals, newspapers, or anything in poor physical condition.

CONTACT: Please contact Cory Tucker, Director of Collection Management, at 895-2133 if you would like to offer a gift to the Library or if you have questions about donating a gift.

Other UNLV Collections

Please note that Special Collections (located in the Lied Library) and the branch libraries have separate gift policies and procedures.  Donors who have materials they believe would strengthen one of these collections, should contact them directly.

Appraisal and Acknowledgement

Staff of the University Libraries cannot provide appraisal of value for books or other materials.  Valuations must be conducted by an independent appraiser. However, written acknowledgement of receipt of a gift of materials will be provided on request.

Development reinvestment disclaimer
The UNLV Foundation collects a one-time fee of five percent of the value of designated gifts through the Foundation and/or the NSHE Board of Regents. The fee is collected from the gift principal and supports administrative costs related to raising private funds for the university. In addition, a portion of the unrestricted funds, known collectively as the Annual Fund, is reinvested in the UNLV Foundation’s fundraising efforts. This money may be used for operating expenses, travel, hosting, and university receptions to produce further gifts.

Tax disclaimer
The UNLV Foundation is an IRS Code 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in November 1981 exclusively to raise private charitable support for educational purposes. Gifts to the Libraries made through the UNLV Foundation (tax ID 94-2790134), are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
