High School Visits to UNLV Libraries

The primary function of the University Libraries is to support the research needs of UNLV students, faculty, and staff. When possible, the Libraries welcomes the opportunity to support UNLV’s Top Tier 2.0 plan by creating community partnerships with local educators. These partnerships focus on preparing students for college success.

Ideally, the Libraries would collaborate with Clark County School District (CCSD) teachers who are teaching college-level, research-based classes such as 11th grade or 12th grade advanced placement (AP) or international baccalaureate (IB) courses. We can connect you with relevant campus resources, including a two-hour tour and/or lunch in the dining commons during your visit to UNLV.

We may be able to support…

  • In-person instruction of UNLV Libraries databases for groups of 30 or fewer students, accompanied by at least one chaperone. These sessions are designed for college-level, research-based assignments where students have already utilized resources from CCSD, local libraries, and free online sources like the Library of Congress. The instruction, including time for resource exploration, lasts 60-75 minutes.
  • Virtual instruction with Special Collections and Archives for groups of 30 or fewer students, with at least one chaperone. This session focuses on using the Special Collections and Archives portal for college-level, research-based assignments. It is designed for students who have already exhausted the available resources through CCSD, the local libraries, and free online sources like the Library of Congress.
  • The best months for scheduling these sessions are November, January, early February, and April.
  • Additionally, tours of Lied Library during the summer months are available for groups of 40 or fewer students, with at least one chaperone per 10 students.

We are unlikely to be able to support…

  • Instruction for 31-60 students (with at least 2 chaperones) for college-level research-based assignments where students have already exhausted the available resources through CCSD, the local libraries, and free online resources such as the Library of Congress.
  • Instruction session plus resource exploration time of 75-120 minutes.
  • Tours of Lied Library as a part of resource exploration time.

We are not able to support…

  • Instruction for middle school or high school level research outside of an AP or IB program.
  • Groups of more than 60 students.
  • Instruction early in the research process when students are still becoming familiar with their topics.
  • Instruction or tours utilizing the Makerspace or Multimedia Studios.
  • In-person instruction utilizing Special Collections.
  • Tours of Lied Library during UNLV’s fall and spring semesters.

Recommendations

  • Tours typically last 20-40 minutes, while instruction sessions range from 60-120 minutes. If your group would like to extend their time on campus, we recommend adding a meal at the dining commons (the only location that can support large group lunches) and/or a campus tour, which lasts 2-2.5 hours. Once the Libraries confirms the date and time, we will assist you in making these additional arrangements.
