1. How will I be able to get a library card if I am not a student?
All persons affiliated with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the
Community College of Southern Nevada are eligible for borrowing privileges
with the UNLV Libraries upon registration with any of the Libraries' circulation
desks.
To assist members of the local community with their specialized
research needs, the UNLV Libraries extend borrowing privileges to the
public. Residents of Clark County, ages
18 and older, may borrow books from the UNLV Libraries upon registration.
To register the borrower must present a valid Nevada driver's license
or Nevada I.D. showing a local street address. The registrant must also
allow the UNLV Libraries to place on file the imprint of a valid major
credit card.
High school students under age 18 may borrow books if they are enrolled
in a for-credit course at UNLV or CCSN or other participating educational
institutions.
Current dues paying alumni may borrow books from the UNLV
Libraries upon registration. To register the borrower must present a
current alumni card and a valid Nevada driver's license or Nevada I.D.
showing a local street address.
To address the specialized business,
scientific and technical information needs of the corporate community
of Nevada, the UNLV Libraries extend borrowing privileges to corporate
borrowers. For an annual registration fee of $275, an organization
or company with Nevada offices will be issued up to two library cards.
For a registration fee of $175, an organization or company with Nevada
offices may obtain borrowing privileges for six months with an issue
of two library cards. Government agencies are exempt from paying registration
fees.
Active duty military personnel may register by presenting a valid
military I.D. card along with proof of residency.
2. How many books can I check out?
All persons affiliated with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the Community College of Southern Nevada
are eligible for an unlimited number of books checked out at one time. Current dues paying members of the
Alumni Association, members of the Executive Board of the UNLV Library Society, and students registered for
correspondence courses through the UNR Division of Continuing Education may borrow up to ten items.
Public borrowers are limited to a maximum of three books checked out on the system,
which includes UNLV and Community College libraries. Corporate borrowers are allowed
to have a total of ten books checked out at one time on each card registered to the corporate member(s).
3.What should I do if I can't find a book on the shelf where it's supposed to be?
In Lied, ask for assistance at Circulation Desk. In branch libraries
(ASL, CML, or Music),
ask for assistance at service counters. If the book has
been checked out, you may place a hold on it at any Circulation
Desk. You will be notified by telephone or e-mail (if we have your current e-mail address) when the book is
available. If we can't reach you by telephone or e-mail, we will mail you a
notice. We will hold the book for you for seven days from the time
we call you or seven days from the time we call, e-mail or mail you the notice. If a
book that is supposed to be on the shelf cannot be located, you may
complete a Search Request at the Circulation Desk and an in-house
search will be initiated. You will be notified when the book is
located, or if the book cannot be found within two weeks.
4. Can I renew library materials over the phone?
No. However, if your card is in good standing (i.e., no money owed, no
overdue items, library card is not expired) you may renew books online by following the
instructions posted at http://www.library.unlv.edu/circ/renewonl.html.
You may not renew a book if another patron has placed a hold in it.
Exceptions may be made for patrons with disabilities who
have made prior arrangements with the Circulation Department.
There is a no-renewal policy for items from the Curriculum Materials Library.
5. If I return a book to a book drop, when will it get checked in?
Book drops across campus are
emptied every day. Books that are returned to a book drop when the library is closed will be checked
in backdated to the last day when the library was open.
6. Can I return UNLV library materials to any other libraries?
UNLV library books may be returned to
libraries in the
Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) system.
Media & Computer Services and
Document Delivery Services materials
checked out from the UNLV Libraries
MUST be returned to the UNLV Libraries.
Books returned to Clark County public libraries will remain charged to your card
until they reach the UNLV Libraries, and you will be responsible for
fees assessed on overdue materials.

8. Where are the photocopiers in the Library?
Photocopiers are located on each floor of the Lied Library. Please refer
to the library floor plans for locations.
Photocopiers are also located at UNLV branch libraries (ASL, CML, or Music).
There is no color photocopier available, but patrons may
make color printouts by scanning an item then sending it to a color printer.
9. Where can I find a pencil sharpener or stapler
in the Library?
Office items for use free-of-charge on the Lied Circulation Desk counter
include a hole puncher, stapler, and pencil sharpener. There are no typewriters
for public use in the Lied Library. Office items and typewriters are available
at the UNLV branch libraries(ASL, CML, or Music).
